Located at the north-eastern end of Tarn-et-Garonne, on the border between the departments of Tarn and Aveyron, the charming village of Varen has kept a fine architectural heritage from its past as a deanery. Reminders include the 11th-century Romanesque church, the 15th-century castle, once the home of the lord dean and today the headquarters of the town council, the fortified door with its machicolation and the rows of pretty houses that make for a pleasant stroll. A mediaeval garden opposite the castle further adds to the charm of the place.
