The city has preserved numerous tracks of its prestigious past, like for example its buildings, monuments and town houses. Lined with beautiful timber-framed houses, this pedestrian square is very pleasant to relax on a café or restaurant terrace. Beautiful facades of old residences are also to be seen around the square. Some of them have preserved their picturesque wooden sculptures. The visit of the capital of Touraine continues with the Saint-Gatien cathedral and its facade richly decorated. This religious monument of late Gothic style is unusual in that it has magnificent old windows dating from the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries. Those who like museums will not get bored neither: • Touraine Archaeological museum situated in the Gouin town house, an elegant building of Renaissance architecture; • Historial of Touraine, in the Tours castle, which illustrates the famous moments of the history of Tours through hundreds of dressed up figures; • Fine art museum in the building of the former Archbishops palace, which brings together collections of art objects from Middle Age to the 20th century; • Non-leaded stained glass museum in the Raimbault town house; • Touraine wines museum in the storerooms of the Saint-Julien abbey.
