Located at the heart of humid Champagne, on the border between the departments of Aube, Marne and Haute-Marne, on either side of the huge Der-Chantecoq Lake, Pays du Der has kept some fine architectural and artistic reminders of its past. Must-see places in Haute-Marne include:

The little town of Montier-en-Der, the capital of the Der area, in a pleasant setting on the banks of the Voire, arranged around its beautiful Abbey Church of St. Peter and St. Paul - the remains of a Benedictine abbey founded in the 7th century by St. Berchaire - remarkable for its Romanesque nave and Gothic chancel with four storeys;

The village of Ceffonds, typical of the area, with its timber-framed houses and Church of St. Rémi, which is decorated on the inside with magnificent 16th-century stained glass windows by the Troyes School;

The little village of Puellemontier, with its picturesque half-timbered façades, and its Church of Our Lady's Nativity, adorned with a superb 16th-century stained glass window of the Tree of Jesse.

Every Autumn in November, Montier-en-Der hosts a famous event, the international festival of animal and nature photography, with pictures to take lovers of fauna and flora on a journey around the world!
