Straddling the departments of Essonne and Seine-et-Marne, the national forest of Sénart has a surface area of over 3 000 hectares and is one of the oldest forests in Ile-de-France. Oaks, hornbeams, chestnut trees, birch trees and pine trees make up the flora of this verdant area. As for fauna, roe deer, boars, foxes, hares and squirrels all live in its undergrowth.
Formerly a royal hunting ground, this vast area is now criss-crossed by trails and cycle paths, and is highly prized by walkers, joggers, cyclists, rollerbladers and horse riders.
In a forest glade at Étiolles you'll find the Sénart Pheasantry, a forest information centre based in a former 18th-century hunting lodge. This is the place to go to find out more about the forest, and boasts a monumental sculpture park.
