Right in the heart of the Camargue, this fishing town with white houses is the pilgrimage centre for gypsies. The Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer church, built in the 12th century and fortified in the 15th century, really looks like a fortress. In the summer, the seaside resort of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer comes alive with its beaches, its cafés, its shops and its restaurants offering the Camargue gastronomic specialities, such as gardiane (bull stew) and telline, a type of small clam.
