Located on the municipality of Solutré-Pouilly, in the heart of the Mâconnais vineyard, the Roche de Solutré (Solutré Rock) is an important prehistoric site that has been awarded the "Great Site of France" label (meaning it meets the conflicting needs of local residents, the environment, and exceptionally large visitor numbers). Many horse bones, flints and coins have been discovered at the foot of this limestone escarpment that was a hunting site for over 25,000 years.
The Solutré prehistory museum dedicated to prehistory and Solutré art houses a collection of the objects found during archaeological digs on the site.
The summit of the Roche de Solutré, which can be reached via a pleasant footpath, offers walkers a superb panoramic view of the Pouilly-Fuissé vineyard, La Bresse, the Saône valley and the Jura.
