The village of La Roche-Guyon lies a short distance from Normandy on the banks of a meander in the Seine at the foot of picturesque chalk cliffs dominated by a keep on the hill behind. It has been named one of France's "Most Beautiful Villages". The fortified keep, which proudly overlooks the Seine valley, is linked to the château via a mysterious stairway dug into the rock. The Château de La Roche-Guyon, owned by the La Rochefoucauld family, features a combination of medieval, Renaissance and classical styles and is open to the public, as is its magnificent formal kitchen garden.
Visitors should also explore the old village streets lined with pretty houses around the château, and enjoy a walk along the banks of the Seine.
La Roche arboretum (13 hectares), located within La Roche-Guyon regional forest, is home to the Ile-de-France region's principal tree species.
