The charming village of Rieux, nestling on the edge of a small river named Arize, possesses a fortified brick-built cathedral of Gothic style. Boasting an octagonal bell tower, the cathedral contains magnificent stalls and Episcopal treasures, including notably a silver reliquary bust. In the streets of the medieval town, a covered market hall and old timber-framed houses are full of south-western French charm.
An event not to be missed: the Papogay festival, which takes place on the first Sunday of May. This traditional festival dating back to the Middle Ages brings together archers to shoot a wooden parrot off a 45 metre high pole. The winner of this contest is appointed king of Rieux for the year.
