RennesRennesGuide of the Ille-et-VilaineGuide of the Ille-et-VilaineTravel Guide > France > Brittany > Ille-et-Vilaine > RennesCapital of the Brittany region and city of Art and History, Rennes invites its visitors to discover its fantastic architecture, from the medieval to the Renaissance periods. Along the walk, the old city of Rennes offers magnificent series of medieval and Renaissance houses, as well as majestic buildings of classic style. The historic centre is convenient to stroll, with its typical paved streets, its lively squares featuring cafe terraces, its creperies and its shops. Not far from the Mordelaises doors, remains of the 15th century that were formerly the main entrance of the city and saw the dukes of Brittany passing by, is located the Saint-Pierre cathedral, a building of the 19th century sheltering rich decorations. To be absolutely discovered: the Champ-Jacquet square and its old houses with particularly picturesque timber framings, but also the Town hall square, the Parlement de Bretagne square, the République square and its ancient Commerce palace, the Lices square and its hall market… The Town hall and the Parlement de Bretagne palace that was minutely restored after the fire of 1994 can be visited. One can then head towards the Thabor garden, a magnificent 10-hectare park featuring among others a botanical garden, a rose garden and a formal garden. The Fine art museum is home to paintings from the 14th to the 20th century, and in particular the famous work of Georges La Tour, "Le Nouveau-né" (“The Newborn child”). The Brittany museum is dedicated to the history of Brittany and exhibits archaeological collections, currencies collections, medals and photos, as well as objects, furniture and tools of the Breton environment. The Rennes Countryside Man and Environment museum, situated south of the city, tells five centuries of history of the Bintinais farm through an exhibition of objects and reconstituted rooms. An event not to be missed: the Lices big market, which takes place every Saturday morning on the Lices square. At the beginning of July, the Tombées de la Nuit (Nightfalls) festival is an important event where the shows of comedians, musicians, jugglers and acrobats liven up the streets of the city.
