Around Verdun, Fort Douaumont, Douaumont Ossuary, Bayonet Trench, cemeteries and destroyed villages on the battlefields express pain and sadness:
• Douaumont Ossuary was built between 1920 and 1932 to house the remains of 130,000 unidentified soldiers;
• Douaumont Fort, built in 1885, played an important role in defending Verdun;
• Bayonet Trench is the place where one infantry regiment was buried alive in 1916;
• Beaumont, Bezonvaux, Cumières, Douaumont, Fleury, Haumont, Louvemont, Orne and Vaux are all villages that were completely destroyed during the war.
These various remains, loaded with emotions, give visitors a first-hand experience of the horrors of the war.
