Extending over the three départements of the Vendée, the Deux-Sèvres and the Charente-Maritime, the Poitou marshes consist of a dry marsh zone, given over to farming and breeding, and a wet marsh area, nicknamed "Green Venice" (Venise Verte) because of its many wide and narrow canals covered in duckweed.
With its boat trips along the tranquil waterways, Green Venice is very romantic and full of charm. This peaceful natural environment is also home to a host of wild bird species.
The piers in the village of Maillezais in the Vendée are an excellent departure point for exploring the Poitou marshes.
