From the coastal town of Golfe-Juan in the Alpes-Maritimes département to Grenoble in the Isère, the Napoleon Road (Route Napoléon) – the historic route that Emperor Napoleon took in 1815 on his return from exile on the island of Elba – crosses scenic mountainous countryside. This famous 325-km long tourist road also passes through a number of places of interest worth stopping at including, in the Isère département, Lake Sautet, Laffrey lakes, Domaine de Vizille (château and estate home to the Museum of the French Revolution), and the city of Grenoble, the final stop on the Napoleon Road.
