From the coastal town of Golfe-Juan in the Alpes-Maritimes département to Grenoble in the Isère, the Napoleon Road (Route Napoléon) – the historic route that Emperor Napoleon took in 1815 on his return from exile on the island of Elba – crosses scenic mountainous countryside. This famous 325-kilometre long tourist road also passes through a number of pretty towns and villages worth stopping at including, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence département, Castellane, Digne-les-Bains and Sisteron, as well as beautiful natural sites like the Clue de Taulanne and Clue de Chabrières transverse valleys.
