From the coast at Golfe-Juan in the Alpes-Maritimes département to Grenoble in the Isère, the Napoleon Road (Route Napoléon), the historic route that Emperor Napoleon took in 1815 on his return from the island of Elba crosses scenic mountain countryside. This famous 325-km long tourist road also passes through a number of pretty towns and villages worth stopping at, including Gap, Tallard and Saint-Bonnet-en-Champsaur in the Hautes-Alpes département.
