In the Artois and Béthunois regions, the former mining activity has created some original scenery. A tour through the town of Lens and other mining towns like Marles-les-Mines, Auchel, and Bruay-la-Buissière, introduces visitors to the different types of miners' housing: miners' terraced houses (corons and barreaux), housing estates (cités pavillonnaires) and garden estates (cités-jardins). Near Lens, the School and Mine Museum explains all about the world of the miners. A trip to the Mining History Centre of Lewarde, the biggest mine museum in France, is not to be missed. This mining area also offers unique landscapes thanks to its many slag heaps – schist mountains located near the former coal shafts. These slag heaps are now bases for walking and recreational sports centres like Loisinord in Noeux-les-Mines where you can even going skiing!
