Basins formed when the glaciers disappeared 12,000 years ago. But the plateau we know today was shaped by man: in the 11th century monks and farmers began creating lakes as important resources for the region. Today, these private stretches of water are essentially used for fishing and leisure activities.
Situated in the heart of the Haute-Saône Vosges, the Mille Étangs plateau offers magnificent scenery and holds many surprises, such as forests of tall spruces completely surrounding some of the small lakes.
