The Haute-Garonne constitutes the departure point of the Midi canal, the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 17th century by Pierre-Paul Riquet between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, the water way of the Midi canal crosses 64 locks and extends over 240 kilometres from Toulouse to the Thau lake near Sète. It is a colossal work: 12,000 men have been mobilized during fifteen years to build it!

Today, the Midi canal is an unmissable site great for relaxation, for both inland navigation and leisure walks on its charming banks: barge tours down the locks, romantic strolls on foot and cycling along the water way. In the Haute-Garonne, 40 kilometres of bicycle paths are offered to cycle fans.
