The Midi canalThe Midi canalGuide of AudeGuide of AudeTravel Guide > France > Languedoc-Roussillon > Aude > The Midi canalThis unique work, built in the XVIIth century by Pierre-Paul Riquet, is at present a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 12,000 men working during 14 years were necessary for the construction of this grand monument of Midi. From Toulouse to the pond of Thau, this canal of 240 kilometres in length of waterways has 64 locks, 55 aqueducts, 126 bridges and 7 canal bridges. This canal, today turned towards tourist discovery, allows to cross cities such as Carcassonne and to discover the landscapes of the Languedoc plain (vineyards, trees, orchards). The walks in the campaign at the edge of the canal are really peaceful and romantic.
