The regional capital possesses a magnificent religious heritage with its beautiful Gothic Saint-Etienne cathedral built between the 12th and the 16th century. The city of Metz also has other treasures: Place d'Armes square where the town hall is located, romantic canals, numerous peaceful green spaces, the medieval Saint-Louis square, the fortified gate Porte des Allemands and important museums, including the Cour d'Or complex.

Metz has been awarded the City of Art and History November 18, 2011. The marina of Metz, Moselle, was awarded the Blue Flag in 2012.
