Travel Guide > France > Ile-de-France > Seine-et-Marne > Melun

The welcoming town of Melun lies on the Seine and is the historic capital of the Capetian Kings of France. It's a lovely place for a wander, with a pedestrian-only centre and pleasant river banks and harbour. For culture fans, the Musée de Melun in the Maison de la Vicomté charts the history and heritage of Melun through archaeological objects, paintings and sculptures.

While you're there, don't miss sampling its famous, strong-tasting AOC cheese, Brie de Melun. An event is held in its honour on the first Saturday of every October with tastings, competitions and a range of entertainment.
