With a surface of 135,000 hectares, the Maures massif extends from Saint-Raphaël to Hyères. It peaks at 780 metres in height near the Notre-Dame-des-Anges priory. From this place, the view of the surrounding countryside is admirable. The vegetation of the Maures mountain range mainly consists of chestnut trees and cork oaks forests, undergrowth and maritime pines. Between Le Lavandou and the Saint-Tropez peninsula, the 'Corniche des Maures' is a magnificent road running alongside the seaside, lined with pleasant seaside resorts, such as Cavalière, Le Rayol-Canadel-sur-Mer ou encore Cavalaire-sur-Mer. Rich in chestnut trees, the Maures massif is famous for its gastronomic specialities based on chestnuts, such as iced chestnuts and chestnut jam. It is to be precise in the village of Collobrières, the capital of the Maures massif, that can be eaten the famous iced chestnuts. A sweet chestnuts festival is held there every year in October. |
