Built at the beginning of the 11th century, the Saint -Pierre abbey of Maillezais, cemetery of the dukes of Aquitaine, is situated in the heart of the poitevin marsh. This Benedictine abbey is unusual in that it has welcomed the writer François Rabelais in the 16th century. The majestic, abbey ruins of the church, as well as the convent buildings, which are home to dining halls, kitchen, storeroom and salt cellar, are open to the visit. Near the abbey is a jetty, departure point for a peaceful boat tour on the conches of the Green Venice. In May and June, the Maillezais abbey, but also the Nieul-sur-l'Autise abbey and the Grammont priory, host the Abbeys festival, an event dedicated to classical music. |
