Built at the beginning of the 11th century, the Saint -Pierre abbey of Maillezais, burial place of the Dukes of Aquitaine, is situated in the heart of the Poitou marshes. This Benedictine abbey is noteworthy for having welcomed the French writer François Rabelais as a monk in the 16th century.
The majestic ruins of the abbey church and the convent buildings, which comprise refectories, a kitchen, cellar and salt store, are open to the public.
A jetty near the abbey is the departure point for peaceful boat trips along the Green Venice canals.
In May and June, Maillezais abbey, Nieul-sur-l'Autise abbey and Grammont priory host the Festival des Abbayes classical music festival.
