Rebuilt after the war, the town of Lorient's architecture dates from the 1950s. It is the number two fishing port in France. An oceanography centre on board a ship called Thalassa moored in the port is open to the public.
The Lorient InterCeltic festival takes place every year in August. This major event is dedicated to the music of the Celtic countries.

The base of submarines (which the allies decided to destroy the city in 1943), the largest German fortress outside of Germany.
The submarine flora, a sub-class submarine Daphne, decommissioned in 1989.
