Lavender is the symbol of Provence. It is grown in the Drôme, the Vaucluse, the Hautes-Alpes, and the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Once harvested and distilled, lavender is used in perfume and pharmacy products. Lavender essential oil is renowned for its calming, relaxing, healing and antiseptic properties. Lavender is also sold in the form of decorative bouquets and perfumed wardrobe sachets. Infused lavender flowers bring a touch of originality to cooking.
A Lavender museum in Cabrières-d'Avignon in the Vaucluse traces the history of lavender and explains distillation methods. Finally, there are numerous discovery circuits through lavender country.
