Planted entirely by hand in the 19th century, the park spreads over 290,000 km², from the banks of the Adour to Arcachon Basin. The purpose of this man-made forest was to stabilise the vast expanses of sand and marsh. Today, the Regional Nature Park contributes to the development of economic and tourist activities in the Gironde while protecting its environment.
