Situated between the two banks of the River Seine, Ile de la Cité island is where the city of Paris began. The island boasts the oldest remains of the royal palace of Paris: the Sainte-Chapelle and the Conciergerie. The Gothic Sainte-Chapelle was built in the 13th century on the order of King Louis IX. With its large stained glass windows, the chapel is magnificent and extremely light. It's an essential stopping point when visiting Paris!
The Conciergerie, which was initially the palace of the Capetians, served as a prison during the French Revolution. Today, it is possible to visit the gallery of Prisoners as well as the reconstruction of Marie-Antoinette's prison. The island also is home to the Palais de Justice (law courts). The Pont-Neuf ("New Bridge"), which is paradoxically the oldest bridge of Paris, connects Ile de la Cité island with the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district.
Situated next to Ile de la Cité island, Ile Saint-Louis island is a quiet district where a real village atmosphere reigns. Beautiful shops and tea rooms occupy the 17th-century houses.
