This inland sea, 5 km wide and 21 km long, closed in by the Rhuys Peninsula, opens on to the ocean through a narrow and dangerous corridor between Port-Navalo and Locmariaquer. The Gulf is strewn with about 40 islands! The most popular are the Ile aux Moines (Monks island), which is the biggest in the bay, and the Arz island, which is very wild. In addition to these places of natural beauty, the beautiful scenery is composed of numerous creeks, cliffs, little islands and headlands.
The Gulf of Morbihan enjoys an exceptional mild climate, so mild that all kinds of Mediterranean vegetation can be found on the Rhuys Peninsula. In winter, the mild weather attracts a multitude of birds, such as herons, cormorants and mallards, which can be observed in the bird reserve and nature reserve.
A beautiful panoramic view of the Gulf and its numerous little islands can be admired from Bilgroix headland. Tide mills, such as Pen Castel mill, are also part of the landscape. The pretty little fishing ports have preserved their picturesque character. As for leisure activities, the Gulf of Morbihan is the ideal place for boat trips and walking, with a footpath going all around the Gulf.
