Grenoble walnuts, which boast the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée quality label and are always sold in their shells, are grown in the Isère Valley. The Pays de Vinay in the southern part of the Grésivaudan Valley is the biggest walnut producing area, with no fewer than 150,000 trees! Grenoble walnuts are famed for their taste as well as their medicinal value, as they are rich in beneficial fatty acids. While they are delicious on their own at breakfast or as a snack, these walnuts can also be tossed in a salad with Roquefort cheese.
Not to be missed: the walnut festival in Vinay, held end-November in even years.
Vinay is also home to the Grand Séchoir, a museum in a beautifully restored old farm where visitors can learn about the history, traditions and heritage of this walnut producing town.
