Originating from the Dauphiné region, the dish gratin dauphinois traditionally consists of thinly sliced potatoes, which are pre-cooked in garlic-flavoured milk, seasoned with salt and pepper, placed in a buttered dish, then covered in cream and small chunks of butter and baked slowly in the oven until golden brown. Tastes delicious served with meat or a green salad.
