Largest estuary in Europe, the Gironde estuary extends over 636 km², 75 kilometres in length, and up to 12 kilometres in width. Eels, lampreys, shad, sea bass, and shrimps are fished there. This estuary is unusual in that it is edged by marshes and limestone cliffs. The charming small fishing ports, as well as the numerous carrelets (fishing huts) bring additional charm.
