The George Sand and Black Valley museum (Musée George Sand et de la Vallée Noire) is housed in a 15th-century keep in the charming little town of La Châtre in the heart of the Indre valley. The exhibits on display include souvenirs, portraits, manuscripts, signed letters and first editions by the famous novelist. The museum is also home to a collection of nearly 3,000 stuffed birds from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as a group of paintings and drawings from the Crozant-Gargilesse School.
After visiting the museum, don't miss walking around La Châtre's old quarter, where you can admire a variety of old house and mansions, including the picturesque, half-timbered Red House (Maison Rouge) described in George Sand's novel André.
