Overlooking the Durance valley from its high wooded plateau, Notre-Dame de Ganagobie Benedictine monastery, which was founded in the 10th century by Bishop Jean II of Sisteron, is famous for its medieval mosaics. Located in the central apse of the church, they are a jewel of Romanesque art. Made in the 12th century, these remarkable polychrome mosaics of Eastern influence feature geometric designs and fantastical animals. Another marvel to discover is the magnificent church portal with its carved tympanum representing Christ in Majesty.
