This work of Outsider Art located in Hauterives was built single-handedly by a postman named Ferdinand Cheval (a.k.a. Facteur Cheval), between 1879 and 1912. He said "10 thousand days, 93 thousand hours, 33 years of tests, should there exist a more determined man than myself, then let him set to work".
This impressive work combines numerous different styles (Romanesque, Oriental, Muslim etc.) and was made a listed monument by André Malraux. Facteur Cheval's Ideal Palace is known all over the world today. He had planned to use it as his own tomb, but did not obtain the necessary licence so built his own tomb in the local cemetery too.
