On 6 June 1944, the beaches of the Manche and Calvados départements entered world history with the famous Normandy Landings when the Allied Forces came to liberate Europe and restore peace, but with heavy human loss. Numerous memorial sites such as Utah Beach (Manche) and Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword Beaches (Calvados), all dotted with commemorative monuments, bear testimony to the scale of the military operations of the D-Day Landings.

A variety of museums recount the events relating to the Landings and the Battle of Normandy:

  • In the Manche, the Landing museum at Utah Beach, the Occupation museum in Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, the Airborne museum in Sainte-Mère-Église, the Liberation museum in Cherbourg-Octeville, and the Cobra memorial in Marigny.

  • In the Calvados, the Landing museum in Arromanches-les-Bains, the Memorial museum of the Battle of Normandy in Bayeux, the Memorial museum of Omaha Beach in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, the Pegasus memorial in Bénouville, the D-Day Omaha museum in Vierville-sur-Mer and the Memorial of Caen.
