On 6 June 1944, the Calvados beaches entered world history with the famous Normandy Landings when the Allied forces came to liberate Europe and restore peace, with heavy human loss. Numerous memorial sites such as the Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword landing beaches, each dotted with commemorative monuments, Arromanches-les-Bains and the remains of its artificial port, military cemeteries, and the Hoc headland (pointe du Hoc) bear testimony to the sheer scale of the military operations of the Normandy Landings. Several museums recount the events relating to the Landings, D-Day and the Battle of Normandy: the Landing museum in Arromanches-les-Bains; the Battle of Normandy Memorial museum in Bayeux; the Omaha Beach Memorial museum in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer; the Pegasus memorial in Bénouville; the D-Day Omaha museum in Vierville-sur-Mer; the memorial of Caen. |
