Situated between the two banks of the Seine river, the Cité island is the origin of the city of Paris. The island has the most ancient remains of the Royal Palace of Paris: the Sainte-Chapelle and the Conciergerie. With a Gothic architecture, the Sainte-Chapelle was set up in the 13th century on order of the king Saint-Louis. With its large stained glasses, the chapel is magnificent and extremely brilliant. It really is a mandatory stopping point when visiting Paris! The Conciergerie, which was initially the palace of the Capetians, served as a prison during the French revolution. Today, it is possible to visit the gallery of Prisoners as well as the reconstruction of Marie-Antoinette's prison. The island also is home to the Law court. The Pont-Neuf ("New Bridge"), which is paradoxically the oldest bridge of Paris, connects the Cité island with the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district. Situated next to the Cité island, the Saint-Louis island is a quiet district where a real village atmosphere reigns. Beautiful shops and tearooms border the houses of the 17th century. |
