Pleasantly situated on the edge of the Vienne River, the old town of Chinon is dominated by its castle, a real fortress endowed with ramparts. A walk in the medieval town reveals pretty half-timbered houses and period properties such as the Red House (Maison Rouge), the Bailliage Palace and the États Généraux mansion, which contains the museum of old Chinon. From the old town, a sloping path takes you to the château on foot. Up there, the view of the town and its surroundings is fantastic. The inside of the fortress is also worth a visit, especially for its magnificent tapestry collection.
