ChâteaudunChâteaudunGuide of Eure-et-LoirGuide of Eure-et-LoirTravel Guide > France > Centre > Eure-et-Loir > ChâteaudunChâteaudun immediately seduces the visitors with its hilltop castle and its old residences raising along the picturesque streets of the old town. Dominating the Loir valley, the castle combines the medieval, Gothic and Renaissance architectures. The visit of the inside allows among others to discover the two stairs of Renaissance and Gothic styles, the keep, the arched kitchens sheltering an exhibition about the Middle Ages gastronomy, the tapestries collection of the Dunois wing, the medieval garden with healing plants, and the Sainte-Chapelle containing remarkable polychromatic statues. Around the castle, the paved alleyways lined with old houses particularly invite to stroll, especially the Saint-Lubin street. Charming parks great for relaxation come on top of this rich heritage. The Mail walk, decorated with benches, offers a beautiful panorama of the Loir valley. Close by, the Mail descent allows to reach on foot the banks of the Loir river. The Fine Art and Natural History museum exhibits an impressive ornithology collection (more than 2500 birds), but also paintings, archaeological objects and pieces from Egypt and Asia. This place also offers a space dedicated to the history of the city. The Laine fair, an important medieval festival, takes place every year the first weekend of July.
