Built in the 11th century by Lord Wilfrid de Virieu, then extended and remodelled up until the 18th century, the Château de Virieu, which dominates the Bourbre Valley, has retained its medieval fortress appearance with an imposing keep, towers and magnificent studded main door. Inside, visitors can explore the main courtyard (Cour d'Honneur), with cannons given by King Louis XIII in 1622, the chapel with a carved stations of the cross, and superb furnished rooms such as the Great Hall, the King's Bedroom, the White Bedroom and the old kitchen with a monumental fireplace. At the foot of the castle lie formal gardens with arabesque-shaped flowerbeds set in grassed squares.
