The historic capital of the Morvan, the town of Château-Chinon, whose mayor was François Mitterrand from 1959 to 1981, is famous for its Septennat Museum. The latter, based in the old 18th-century convent of the Clarisses, contains official and personal gifts received by the President of the Republic, François Mitterrand, during his last two seven-year terms of office. After admiring the amazingly diverse collections at the museum, continue your visit to Château-Chinon by discovering the Notre-Dame Door, a relic of an old rampart, and the monumental fountain by Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely. Then head to the panoramic site of the wayside cross, in the heights of the town, to admire the beautiful view of the slate roofs of Château-Chinon and the landscapes of the Morvan and Bazois!
