In the heart of the forest of Boulogne abounding in game, François Ier built over a fortified castle an impressive residence with rich decorations in the 16th century. Renaissance masterpiece, the Chambord castle is the biggest of the Loire valley castles, with its 440 rooms, its 800 carved capitals and its 365 fireplaces! This striking and elegant building consists of a central keep with four round towers and a surrounding wall. Its famous stair with double revolution constitutes a real architectural exploit. This ingenious construction allowed two people to go up and down the stairs without crossing each other! After visiting the apartments, a tour on the terrace of the castle is mandatory. From there, the view of thousands of attic windows, chimneys, capitals, spires and pinnacles of the building offers an amazing picture. What a marvel The terrace of the keep also allows to enjoy a beautiful view of the park of the Chambord national domain. As a hunting reserve, the park of the castle is encircled by a 32-kilometre long wall, which makes this park the largest closed forested space in Europe. The visitors wishing to stroll can walk along the numerous path of the park. Carriage tours are also offered from the Marshal of Saxony stables. | LOCALISATION IN LOIR-ET-CHER | | | |
