The Cathar CastlesThe Cathar CastlesGuide of the AudeGuide of the AudeTravel Guide > France > Languedoc-Roussillon > Aude > The Cathar CastlesThese ruined castles are situated in the Corbières, a wild area characterised by mountains, vineyards, arid and solitary hills, rocky peaks and valleys of red soil. Peyrepertuse is the most impressive Cathar citadel with its 2.5 kilometres of ramparts. Its magnificent ruins, in the middle of holm oaks, dominate the surrounding area. Quéribus, Cathar citadel, is considered as the last stronghold of the Cathar resistance. Near Quéribus is situated the village of Cucugnan made famous by Alphonse Daudet. In the old village, there is a beautiful restored mill as well as the beautiful view of the surroundings. There is a trail linking the Cathar castles, but it is vital to walk it when the weather is clear. Firstly so that the various ruins are easy to see, but also to take advantage of the panoramic views from the top of the citadels.
