Guide of the Aude

Travel Guide > France > Languedoc-Roussillon > Aude > Carcassonne

The largest walled medieval town in Europe, the citadel of Carcassonne has two gigantic ramparts, 52 towers and is surrounded by 3 km of walls. Both the Lower Town (Ville Basse) and Upper Town (Ville Haute) are interesting to visit, not least for the remains of over 2,000 years of history. The fortified city is a lovely place to wander around. You'll also find numerous shops selling souvenirs, as well as restaurants serving local specialities.
