With its 117,000 hectares of vineyards and 13,000 wine producers, the Gironde has the biggest concentration of AOC wine-producing vineyards in the world. Who does not know fine wines such as Saint-Estèphe, Médoc, Margaux, Saint-Émilion, Pomerol and Sauternes. Vineyards extend as far as the eye can see and are dotted with numerous castles. Over 10,000 of them in fact! Some wine estates can be visited if you book first.
The area surrounding the Gironde estuary is divided into five big regions: Médoc, Libournais, Sauternais and Grave, Entre-Deux-Mers and Blayais. These different regions are in turn split into several different "appellations" (districts producing AOC wines), for example Saint-Émilion, Margaux and Pomerol. The Gironde's vineyards produce 57 AOC wines in total. Red wine represents 80% of the whole production. The rest consists of sweet and dry white wines, as well as rosés.
