With its 115,000 hectares of vineyards and its 13,000 wine growers, the Gironde is the biggest vineyards in the world. Who does not know fine wines such as Saint-Estèphe, Médoc, Margaux, Saint-Émilion, Pomerol and Sauternes. Vineyards extend as far as the eye can see and are dotted with numerous castles. The vineyards indeed has more than 10,000 castles! Some domains can be visited on booking. Five big zones divide the surrounding area of the Gironde estuary: Médoc, Libournais, Sauternais and Grave, Entre-Deux-Mers and Blayais. These various zones divide in turn into several naming as for example Saint-Émilion, Margaux or Pomerol. The vineyards count 57 namings in total. Red wine represents 80% of the whole production. The rest consists of sweet or dry white wines, as well as rose wines. |
