Situated on the edge of the Loire river, the city of Art and History of Blois immediately appeals to the visitor by its architectural homogeneity. The royal castle, the houses of the old town, and the religious monuments of Blois form a harmonious architectural whole.
Former residence of the kings of France, the castle of Blois is a majestic building unusual in that it gathers several architectural styles: Gothic, late Gothic, Italian Renaissance and Classic. A magnificent range of the French architecture … The gate surmounted by an equestrian statue of Louis XII, the magnificent inner courtyard and its four wings dating from different periods and displaying various architectures, and the sumptuous spiral staircase in the François Ier wing, are among the wonders of this castle. The Fine art museum located in the Louis XII wing exhibits a collection of tapestries, paintings and sculptures. Every year from April to September, the night show "Ainsi Blois vous est conté…" is hold in the yard the castle to remind the history of this famous building.
Outside, the Castle square constitutes a very pleasant place to have a drink at one of the cafe terraces. It is from this square, from the entrance of the castle to be precise, that are offered carriage tours of the old town.
In front of the castle, the Robert-Houdin Magic House is completely dedicated to magic and illusion. Kids and adults can discover the history of magic, as well as collections of magic instruments, such as for example those of the famous conjurer Robert-Houdin. The Old-Time Objects museum is another place to visit. In this former convent are exposed the works of famous contemporary artists, such as Dali, Caesar, Arman and Christo. Horses enthusiasts should go to the National Stud farm to plunge into the universe of horses and its history.
The visit of Blois continues with the sloping picturesque historic narrow streets of the centre, very charming and great for strolling. Beautiful gardens can be discovered towards the Saint-Louis cathedral. Of the vast esplanade of the Town hall, the view is really magnificent on the gardens of the Bishop's palace, the slate roofs of the old town and the royal river!
