Capital of the département, the Belfort city is the symbol of heroic resistance. It indeed allowed the area not to be annexed by Germany and to develop intensely. The Territoire de Belfort will be created only in 1922 after long debates. Today, the city offers to the visitors acquainting with its heroic past by discovering the Vauban citadel built between 1687 and 1703 as well as the Lion, emblem of the département, carved by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi between 1875 and 1879.
