Capital of the département, the city of Belfort is the symbol of heroic resistance. Its strength of character prevented the area from being annexed by Germany and enabled it to develop intensely. The Territoire de Belfort was not officially recognised until 1922, after lengthy debates.
Today, the city holds examples of its heroic past in store for visitors, including the Vauban citadel built between 1687 and 1703 and the Lion, the département's emblem, a sculpture dating from 1875-79 by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, creator of the Statue of Liberty. This 22 metre-long and 11 metre-high monument is located below the citadel. The city also boasts beautiful squares and cafés.
