This tradition dates from the 17th century, with the creation in 1664 of the royal tapestry manufacture. It was only in 1989, after the buildings were destroyed in 1940, that the workshops of the national tapestry manufacture, which specialised in horizontal looms, were moved to Beauvais.
Near the cathedral, the National Tapestry Gallery puts on to temporary exhibitions.
