This city of Beaune is famous for its hospices, the Hôtel-Dieu, a prestigious place built in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor of Philippe le Bon, to help sick and disadvantaged people. Today, the hospices are a museum. The big inner courtyard, impressive Salle des Pôvres (where the sick lay), kitchen, Gothic chapel and apothecary can be visited. It is famous for the charity wine auction it holds every November.
Surrounded by ramparts and bastions, the old town of Beaune has preserved pretty Renaissance mansions, as well as charming inner courtyards. Notre-Dame collegiate church of the 13th century and the residence of the Dukes of Burgundy are also beautiful examples of architecture.
