Located at the edge of the Yonne, the medieval old town of Auxerre boasts numerous half-timbered houses. The "tour de l'Horloge" (clock tower) is handsome with its pedestrian street. The Saint-Etienne cathedral of Gothic architecture was built from the XIth to the XVIth century. The city also possesses the Saint-Germain abbey, a Benedictine abbey. Its Carolingian crypts of the IXth century are decorated with the oldest murals known in France. |
