Located on the edge of the Yonne, the medieval old town of Auxerre boasts numerous half-timbered houses. The "tour de l'Horloge" (clock tower) is handsome with its pedestrian street.
The Saint-Etienne cathedral of Gothic architecture was built from the 11th to the 16th century. The city also possesses the Saint-Germain abbey, a Benedictine abbey. Its 9th-century Carolingian crypts are decorated with the oldest murals known in France.
