With a surface area of 395,000 hectares, the Auvergne Volcanic Regional Nature Park is the largest nature park in France! Spreading across the départements of Cantal and Puy-de-Dôme, this vast area is a walkers' paradise and comprises four volcanic mountain ranges – the Chaîne des Puys, Monts Dore, Cézallier and Monts du Cantal – and an ancient granite plateau, L'Artense.
The Chaîne des Puys mountains in the département of Puy-de-Dôme is a must for nature lovers, especially its best-known and most visited volcanic peak, the Puy de Dôme. From its summit there's an exceptional 360° view of the surrounding Auvergne volcanoes! The top of Puy de Sancy mountain further south also provides a fantastic view of the Monts Dore landscapes.
Other sites to explore in the area include the twin peaks of Roche Tuilière and Roche Sanadoire (remains of old volcanoes separated by Fontsalade valley), Guéry lake (the highest in the Auvergne), Chaudefour valley and nature reserve, Chambon, Pavin and Aydat lakes, the peaceful Cézallier mountains, the Château de Murol and the Romanesque churches in Orcival and Saint-Nectaire.
Not to be missed: Vulcania, the European volcano park located near Puy de Lemptegy in Saint-Ours-les-Roches – an educational, fun and interactive theme park dedicated to volcanoes and volcanic phenomena throughout the world.
To find out more about the Auvergne Volcanic Regional Nature Park, the park visitor centre (Maison du Parc) located in the Château de Montlosier in Aydat offers a wealth of information, including exhibitions and themed walks.
